Dec. 23rd, 2012 11:39 pm67Threnody just posted a list of what she had bought people for Christmas and I really enjoyed reading it as, for me, the lead up to Christmas, buying and wrapping presents and anticipating everyone's responses is the best part of Christmas.
Feeling in a thoroughly festive mood after going to see It's A Wonderful Life at my local independent cinema (it was the first time I'd ever seen it, and it elicited a round of applause from the sold out auditorium at the end of film!) I thought I'd share with you the things I made for Christmas this year - in a bid to give as much as I ever do but on a much limited budget (£30 per person this year instead of the usual £50 I allow/have been able to afford previously)
First up three stockings which are for, left to right, my brother's girlfriend, my eldest brother, and my middle brother (whose girlfriend the first one is for);

Brother's girlfriend is mad keen on pink, eldest brother is now and always has been a Mod at heart, middle brother is mad for Superman. Next up is a Buffy cross-stitch I did for my old flatmate. We get together every Monday and watch Buffy and Angel episodes, in chronological order. We started when I moved in with her back in 2009, took a two year hiatus when I moved back to my parents, and resumed when I got back to Brighton in August. I made a little zip up bag and sewed the cross stitch on to that, and then filled the bag with nail files, nail varnish etc as she invariably rummages through her bag for a nail file whilst we're watching Buffy;

Spike, Willow, Angel, Buffy, Xander, Giles, l-r if you were wondering. My Mum's gifts, as ever, came in as much more expensive per item than anyone else's so I decided to make her a 'main gift' too. Knowing she doesn't care for anything without purpose I decided to give making a hot water bottle a crack;
For some reason the photo of the front/reverse of the hot water bottle cover won't upload the right way up and I can't find the original in order to get a decent contrast sorted out, but you get the idea;
I am reasonably happy with it, it was a good fit all the way through the tacking and sewing process but somehow the finished article was a bit on the snug side. Also, as you can see in the first photo, the flap is a little wonky! Hopefully the complexity of the sewing on the swallow will distract my Mum from that...! Finally, and somewhat last minute, I decided I wanted to do some hand appliqué with felt (all the other appliqué above is done on machine) so whipped up a stocking each for my parents. They are about half the size of those three I posted at the beginning of the entry. I'm particularly pleased with the robin so you get a close up of that;

I'm giving the one on the left to my Mum and the one on the right to my Dad. Below is a close up on the robin;

Ta da! What are you doing for Christmas? What is the gift you are most looking forward to seeing the recipient unwrap?
