Later with Jools Holland is one of those shows it's hard to find the time to watch - not least of all because of it's antisocial scheduling - but when you do put the effort in you are invariably rewarded with some great new music. It is with this in mind that I hope people tuned in this week and discovered the Manics were not the band they thought. Journal for Plague Lovers is like nothing they have done in many, many years and whilst the links to The Holy Bible are clear, it still sounds fresh, new and unlike everything else circulating the charts right now.

I am more excited about this album release than any other album release ever. I want them to get the broad recognition they so deserve. I'm excited about them carving out critical and popular acclaim on their terms. I actually *believe* in the Manics brand for the first time in such a long time.

The gig in June is going to be the first gig I've ever gone to alone and goddamnit, I know they are going to reward my taking that chance/step a hundred times over. This album, and tour, is already a very personal experience. I'm so glad it is the Manics and not any other band who are there to mark the passing of one phase of my life and what I anticipate to be some big, dramatic changes as I enter the next phase.

We have a history, this band and I, and it looks like we're going to have a very important future.

ETA; The joy and dynamism and CHEMISTRY is all right there again, on the surface in their performances. It's a joy to behold. As are the subtitles, actually got to 'hear' the lyrics to peeled apples, jackie collins and stephen hawking for the first time!
