HP are AWFUL.
There's nothing more awesome than having to quote consumer law and make a million phone calls in order to actually get what you're entitled to.
HP are, predictably, denying all responsibility for the broken lcd display on my notebook. The very nice HP employee I spoke to told me they get 'a lot' of laptops returned with this fault every day. She also advised me to contact trading standards. HP have concluded the damage is probably caused by my bending the screen when I close it. This is a) ridiculous, because I don't and if I did my old laptop wouldn't have lasted 6 years and b) irrelevant: trading standards tell me they have to prove that I caused the damage rather than speculate that that is the cause. This, of course, will prove impossible because I DIDN'T BREAK IT.
I called eBuyer and told them I was entitled to a repair for free, or my money back and that it was up to them to fight with HP. The man I spoke to said I was 100% right and that HP's explanation was 'ridiculous' and that he couldn't understand how anyone could make the same conclusion they did about the cause of the fault.
HP are sending me a copy of the report and my laptop, upon receipt I pass it all along to eBuyer and leave it to them. It is absurd that I have to go to these lengths just to be treated as the law says I should be treated.
HP for the absolute fail.
